Lip reduction
Lip reduction means reducing permanently lip hypertrophy through an incision in the mouth.
Before the procedure
A preoperative check-up is made following your surgeon’s recommendations. An anaesthesiologist will see you in consultation at the latest 48 hours before the operation.
Smoking is not prohibited but it is advised to stop smoking one month before the operation because it affects healing. No aspirin-based medication should be taken during the 10 days preceding the operation.
The procedure
Most of the time, the operation is carried out under local anaesthesia or under sedation in an ambulatory facility (you will return home on the very same day). Lip reduction means a harmonious refinement of the lips.
The operation consists in extracting a portion of the lip mucus membrane and obricular muscle through the inner lip, on the mucosal tissues. In order to respect the natural shape of the lips, the resection is spindle-shaped. Stitches are dissolvable and disappear around the 21st day.
Scars are hidden in the mouth and are invisible.
The procedure lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
After the procedure
You can return home on the very same day. Lip reduction is carried out in an ambulatory facility.
You will be asked to apply Vaseline on your lips during 7 days.
Stitches are dissolvable and disappear in 15 to 20 days. There is no need to remove them.
Oedema (swelling) can appear during 7 to 15 days after the operation. Bruising rarely appears and minor pains are well balanced by the usual pain-killers. The final result can be appreciated between 1 and 2 months after the operation, once the swelling has disappeared.
Complications are rare (bruising, infection and disjunction). In the vast majority of cases, patients are very satisfied with the result.
