Hymenoplasty is the reconstruction of the broken hymen.
Hymen is usually broken after sexual intercourse.
The operation aims at reconstructing it without visible scars.

What is a hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty is a surgery aiming at reconstructing the broken hymen. The hymen, usually broken after sexual intercourse, is reconstructed invisibly.
Hymenoplasty is often carried out for individual convenience or after sexual assault.
What is involved in hymen repair? What is the follow-up?
The most common technique consists in stitching the hymen from the torn edges and closing it. The surgery in performed on 2 layers in order to reconstruct firmly and durably the hymen.
The stitches are done with very fine material and resorb by themselves in about 15 days.
Healing takes about one month.
The stitches are dissolvable and the scar is almost invisible after 1 to 2 months.
The hymen is natural, the scars nearly invisible and hidden in the folds of the hymen.
The operation usually lasts 30 minutes.
The follow-up is light, pains are minor but are well balanced by the usual pain-killers such as paracetamol.
You will need to stop working during 48 hours.
Sports are advised against during 15 days to 3 weeks.
When is it possible to have sexual intercourse after a hymenoplasty?
After 15 days minimum, the time for the tissues to start healing.
Will I bleed during a sexual intercourse after hymenoplasty?
After hymenoplasty, bleeding is present in the way it is with a natural hymen.
Are there any risks associated with the surgery?
The operation carries few risks. However any operation carries a small risk of bruising, infection, disjunction, local sensivity troubles, usually temporary.
Can any family member be informed about the surgery?
No. Medical confidentiality is absolute. No one except you will be able to access your medical file. The surgeon is not allowed to give any information concerning your medical file to a third party, irrespective of the relationship.
Before the procedure
Two consultations with your surgeon with at least 15 days between each are advised for before a hymenoplasty for personal convenience.
You will need to stop working during 24 to 72 hours after the surgery, which is not paid for by health insurance.
No aspirin-based, anti-inflammatory medication or oral anticoagulants should be taken during the 15 days preceding the operation to reduce the risk of bleeding.
Most of the time, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia.
Local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia can also be performed.
The procedure
The operation involves excision on the torn edges, the scar covering them, before stitching them on 2 layers for a solid reconstruction of the hymen.
The operation lasts about 30 minutes.
After the procedure
The operation is carried out in an ambulatory facility.
You can return home a few hours after the surgery.
Stitches are dissolvable and disappear in 10 to 15 days.
There is no dressing, only cleansing with tap water (shower) and soap.
The scar is hidden in the hymen folds and is absolutely invisible.
The result is immediate, the hymen is closed.
Hymen repair is solid after 15 days to 1 month.

Before the procedure
- Medical exams: 1 or 2 surgical consultations.
- Recommendations: stop smoking 1 month before, stop aspirin-based and anti-inflammatory medication 10 days before the surgery.
- Signing of the estimate, informed consent and medical photographies.
- Reflection period: 15 days between the first consultation and the surgery.
The procedure
- Anaesthesia: intravenous drip or locale.
- Duration of the procedure: 45 minutes.
- Return home: the very same day.
Follow-up and results
- Special care: personal hygiene in the morning, in the evening and after urination.
- Removal of the stitches: not necessary, they are dissolvable.
- Desocialisation after the surgery: none.
- Physical activities: 1.5 month.
- Professional activities: 24 hours.
Final result: 1 month.
