Calf implants

description

Calf implants are used to enhance the shape of too thin calves.

This technique was first used for reconstructive surgery in case of poliomyelitis, clubfoot and Charcot's Disease, where calf muscle do not develop sufficiently, most of the time on one side only.

It was thereafter adopted in plastic surgery to enhance the shape of too thin calves.

Calf muscles can be underdeveloped and their volume is limited even after intensive training, unlike other muscles in the body.

Calf implants are one of solutions to bring volume to thin calves.

Before the procedure

A clinical examination is done and the surgeon takes photographs.

A Doppler can be asked to evaluate the state of muscles, arteries and veins.

The surgeon discusses the patient's expectations and proposes an adapted size and type of implant for the result expected and local anatomical conditions.

An anaesthesia consultation with a preoperative check-up before the operation is carried out.

In case of underlying condition (clubfoot, poliomyelitis sequel...), partial coverage by health insurance and mutual insurance is possible.

The procedure

The operation is carried out under general anaesthesia or rachis anaesthesia.

The implants are introduced through an incision hidden in the popliteal crease (behind the knee), under the membrane enveloping calf muscles (muscle fascia of the leg posterior cavity).

Most of the time, implants are composed of cohesive silicon gel inside a smooth envelope more or less long and voluminous.

1 or 2 implants can be introduced in each calf, according to the anatomy of the patient and the desired volume.

In case of major calf atrophy (clubfoot, poliomyelitis sequel, very thin calf...), it may be difficult to place 2 implants at the same time.

One isolated implant is introduced and the second one is placed 3 months later for the skin and the fascia to untighten.

After the procedure

You will be asked to wear a pressure garment with restraints during 30 days after surgery. You can walk on the day of the operation.

It is advised to wear 3 to 4 cm heels to relax calf muscles and reduce discomfort when walking.

In the first week, ecchymosis (bruises) and oedema (swelling) can appear in the calf and ankle areas.

Stitches are dissolvable and suppressed by the body in a 3 months period of time.

The practice of sport must be discontinued during 2 to 3 months.

A regular clinical follow-up is planned for several years.

Contrary to breast implants, implants do not need to be changed, unless the envelope breaches.
